The Future Shall Be Ours: an Encounter on the Campaign Trail

Statement

Dear Friend,

In the year 1976, a lot of good things happened. Of course, it was our
country's glorious bicentennial. But also in 1976 my mom, Alice
Williamson--who is now 91 and living in an assisted living facility--was
the president of the Scottsdale Democratic Luncheon Club.

We'll get back to this later, after I tell about something that happened
this past Thursday when I went with Mom to her doctor's appointment at the
CIGNA downtown Phoenix medical center at 3rd St. and E. Earll Drive. She
had to see a podiatrist there because she is recovering from an injury to
her left lower leg and podiatrists these days attend to this kind of a
wound. The dressing needs to be changed every week.

The appointment went well and her wound is almost healed. At least one
more visit will be necessary.

It was while she and I were waiting in the lobby to be picked up by the
transportation lady from where Mom lives, that I saw someone who I felt
quite sure was Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema walking in our direction
accompanied by a small entourage. I think she noticed that I was looking
at her as if to ascertain it was really her. Then she walked on by to some
kind of meeting.

In about 20 minutes, she came out of this meeting and was walking back
towards where Mom and I were sitting, still waiting for our ride. I turned
around and saw her close by and said: "Are you Kyrsten Sinema?"

She said yes and walked over to talk with Mom and me. She shook my hand
and, in her very bright and compassionate way, asked me my name. I told
her and she went over to Mom, who was in a wheelchair, and said: "How is
everything going here?"

Mom gave a big smile, sensing, I think, that she was being greeted by
someone very important who cared about her.

"In 1976," I told Kyrsten, "Mom was the president of the Scottsdale
Democratic Luncheon Club."

Kyrsten looked at me with some astonishment and said: "I was BORN in 1976!"

Then she left and she and her entourage took the elevator upstairs,
presumably to another meeting.

But that was not all, because about 15 minutes later Mom and I were still
waiting for our ride and Kyrsten came back down to the lobby. I had told
her when she first came over that I was the Democratic nominee for
District 6, but I think she misunderstood and thought I meant LEGISLATIVE
District 6 and not CONGRESSIONAL District 6. So now I clarified this as
she walked by us again:

"I'm the Democratic nominee in CONGRESSIONAL District 6," I said.

Kyrsten smiled broadly and said with some humor: "Then you've got your
work cut out for you."

Friend, Congresswoman Sinema is right: it's an uphill battle for a
Democratic candidate like myself in Congressional District 6, but it is

cyborg that seems sometimes to be unstoppable. Yet with support from

THE FUTURE SHALL BE OURS when we recognize and condemn David Schweikert's
hypocrisy when he says he wants to "save the Republic." In 2011 and 2013
when he supported two government shutdowns, he caused damage to our
government and to the American people. In 2011, Schweikert's support of
the shutdown led to the downgrading of the U.S. debt rating. In 2013
Schweikert was part of the same group of intransigent Republicans whose
shutdown efforts led to about 800,000 federal employees being furloughed
for two weeks. That caused a lot of pain to families who depended on that
income that was not there for 14 days. That was also money not available
for consumption to support the economy and jobs. ("The Future Can Be Ours:

Moreover, David Schweikert has not disavowed the unethical candidacy of Donald Trump.

And so, my fellow citizens, ask not what you can do to help David
Schweikert "save the Republic," but what you can do to save the Republic
from David Schweikert.
